A peaceful place

Everyone knows that St Francis, who loved birds and animals, was born in Assisi. It took us a while to discover that on the edge of Cortona is a peaceful place where he also lived and prayed. It is not in many guide books.
It is a Franciscan hermitage known as Le Celle. In 1211, St Francis along with a few of his followers built the first nine cells of the hermitage and it has taken the name of Celle ever since. We think its setting evokes a more quiet, spiritual atmosphere than Assisi. It is easy to visit
